Some tips:

Always use a constants lookup file with any custom code so you can have an environment-specific lookup file and use the same code.

The Portal migration scripts work better if you have the same people in all environments – particularly if they are members of manual groups or sets.

Small changes are often simpler to apply by hand rather than configuration migration.

Refreshing Dev and Test Environments

Inevitably Dev and Test environments will diverge from the Prod environment, so it can sometimes be very useful to do a refresh from Prod.

The best way to ensure you get everything is by transferring the databases. If you’re transferring to a different domain you need to do a couple of other steps:

Reinstall the Sync Service using the prod DB and specifying new service accounts and groups.

Reinstall the Portal using the prod DB and specifying new service accounts. Then use this script to change the Built-In Administrator account.

For anything above the simplest GALSync deployment, and particularly if you have the FIM Portal, you must have development and test environments.
